Outhouse hosts some tenant organisations who rent office space on the second and third floors. Their presence and activities contribute fundamentally to the life of the building. The work that these organisations do is integral to development of LGBT life both in the city and nationally. The income generated by their presence is also core to keeping the building open and running.
Gay Switchboard Dublin (GSD)
GSD provides a confidential and non-judgemental listening, support and information telephone service for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community, their families and friends (LGBT+) or indeed anyone who needs to discuss issues relating to diversity, sexuality and sexual and mental health. GSD has been providing telephone support & information to the LGBT+ community since 1974, making it the oldest LGBT+ support service in Ireland. GSD answers 2000+ calls each year. Callers discuss things such as coming out and going out, loneliness and isolation, relationships, bullying and discrimination, mental and sexual health concerns, worried parents, teachers, siblings and friends etc. All callers to GSD are listened to with patience, dignity and respect and while each of the trained volunteers are not counsellors or therapists they do offer confidential support and encouragement. GSD Volunteers can also offer sign-posting to other services, if appropriate. Most of all, GSD volunteers listen without making any judgements; often callers just need someone to listen to them, to hear them and perhaps share their anxieties or simply have a chat about issues. www.gayswitchboard.ie
