Welcome to the second meet up of the GAZE x Outhouse: Queer Film Club! This new and vibrant, community-driven film club is a collaboration between Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre and GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival.
🎬 Cue the glitter cannon — we’re diving into queer cinema history with our next pick: The Watermelon Woman! It’s bold, brilliant, and the first feature film directed by an out Black lesbian. It is a super cool, funny, and smart indie film from the ‘90s, made by Cheryl Dunye — who also stars in it. It follows her character, a young Black lesbian filmmaker, as she becomes obsessed with uncovering the story of an old Hollywood actress known only as “The Watermelon Woman.” As she digs deeper, she uncovers lost queer history, questions of identity, and even finds a bit of romance along the way. It’s part mockumentary, part love story, and all heart — a total gem that still hits today.
