On this National Coming Out Day, we want to recognise the vital role our allies play in supporting LGBTQ+ people. Your love, understanding, and advocacy can truly make a difference, especially when someone you care about is navigating the process of coming out or exploring their identity.
Coming out is an ongoing and deeply personal journey for many that can be filled with both joy and challenges. As an ally, you have the opportunity to offer support in ways that create safety, trust, and affirmation. Here are some ways you can be there for the LGBTQ+ people you care about:
Listen and believe:
When someone trusts you enough to come out to you, listen without judgment. Affirm their experiences and feelings without trying to solve or fix things for them. Your role is to be supportive and understanding.
Respect their pace:
Coming out is different for everyone. Some people may be ready to share with the world, while others may only feel comfortable telling a select few. Respect their choices and timelines—they know what’s best for their situation.
Ask for guidance, not explanations:
It’s okay to ask how you can support them, but avoid pushing them to explain their identity or decisions. Questions like “How can I be here for you?” show your willingness to learn, while intrusive or overly personal questions can feel overwhelming.
Be a safe space:
Ensure they know that your relationship is a judgment-free zone. Avoid making assumptions or treating them differently once they’ve come out. Normalising their identity in your interactions can ease the pressure they might feel.
Educate yourself:
Take the time to learn about LGBTQ+ identities and experiences without expecting them to teach you everything. Being informed not only helps you avoid missteps but also shows that you’re committed to being a stronger ally.
Uplift and advocate:
Whether someone is out publicly or privately, use your voice to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion. Even when LGBTQ+ people aren’t present, your efforts to challenge discrimination help create a more inclusive world for everyone.
Support local LGBTQ+ organisations:
LGBTQ+ centres and organisations, like Outhouse, offer critical resources and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people. Consider supporting, donating, or spreading the word to help these organisations continue their important work.
Remember, coming out is a gift of trust and vulnerability. It’s an ongoing process, and your support—whether big or small—can make a lasting impact. Thank you for being there, for learning, and for standing with the LGBTQ+ community today and every day.
